CEIMH Directors Report May 2010
Tarsem gave his report for May. In terms of Suresearch he related that Ann Davis is discussing the possibility of securing office space in Muirhead Tower with the College of Social Scences where CEIMH will be moving. Since the report has been written Ann Davis has confirmed that Suresearch can book monthly meetings at the University until the end of the next academic year in July 2011.
The third successful Training the Trainers course, delivered by MIND Birmingham, culminated in a presentation which was filmed by Suretech. Ann Davis provided feedback to participants as a member of the assessment panel. Anne Lloyd and Peter Downes completed the course and found it a valuable experience.
The May Survivor Research Network seminar entitled ‘Using peer researchers to explore service user & carer views on compulsory admission to hospital: a Northern Irish perspective’ led to some excellent discussion. The next one in the series ‘From Projects to Partnership: building collaborative research in Scotland’ is at CEIMH on Wednesday June 16th 4-6pm.
Help Required
Reena Kooner, who is completing her Masters degree in Social Work at the University, requested help in her research project. She is looking at the workplace experiences of Social Work professionals (practitioners or managers) who have experienced and disclosed mental health difficulties and the responses and attitudes of colleagues. Anyone who can help to identify such a person who might be prepared to speak about their experiences should contact Reena on reenakooner@hotmail.co.uk or rkk838@bham.ac.uk for further info.
Heart of England HUB
Jackie Smart reported that that HoE had put in a bid for a small focus group of service users & carers to look at and refresh the Good Practice guidelines of MHRN. Three to four people are required and there will be a six week turnaround. Jackie should know whether the bid has been successful by the end of June. Anyone interested should contact Jackie.
The Co-ordinating Centre of the Network is keen to develop service user training in Clinical Governance courses, useful in research. The Clinical Research Network is also looking for new services users who would have received training around National Ethics committees. The Co-ordinating Centre is looking to do a National Training Needs Analysis. A new model payments policy has been issued.
Four Suresearch members are now signed up for the NHS Project Management course in September. Jackie was thanked for finding two extra places for Suresearch members and HoE’s continuing support of Suresearch.
Dr. Ann Crawford-Doherty of Sandwell MH & Social Care is looking for a service user who could lead a half day workshop session on Qualitative Analysis to the ‘Making A Difference’ group. The group will be doing an evaluation of outpatient appointments and home visits.

Webwatch
Stephen reported the website still needed to build up its links/resources info. Reports of conferences and events attended by Suresearch members are requested as well as photos/images to lighten up the text. The need for the website to go independent of the University hosting system was re-iterated.
There will be a short informal meeting on Wednesday, June 16th at 2.00pm followed by a a full meeting on Wenesday June 30th at 10.30, both at CEIMH.
Future of Suresearch
Paul McDonald, Research Manager of BSMHFT, was our invited guest at the recent meeting of May 11th. Suresearch needs post October 2010 with the closure of CEIMH were outlined. This included accommodation for Suresearch meetings, use of office space including computer and phone facilities and even some staff support. Paul was hopeful of being able to offer support and will get back to us. Suresearch involvement in BSMHFT research projects would be a requirement for such support, in effect a collaborative partnership.
Other issues discussed were the potential for raising income by SS instigating research projects and being involved in evaluations as an independent organisation.
In order to do this SS would have to be a fully constituted organisation which was another issue further discussed in ‘what sort of organisation’. Suresearch’s immediate future in terms of its practical functioning is likely to be clarified soon and it may not need to be a fully constituted organisation by October 2010 to continue. However there will be a need for an income stream to cover basic costs ( photocopying & mailing out minutes to postal members, refreshments at meetings, travel expenses, phone & computer costs) if other organisations are unable to offer support. In it would be good to be able to pay volunteers (ie website) however small in acknowledgement of their contribution too. Promotion of SS would be made easier if it was a fully constituted organisation, locally based and with a proven track record. Gary offered to show links from his website to possible income providers after the meeting.
It was agreed to have a full discussion at the September 1st SS meeting where recommendations from the Futures group will be made. This will be part of its Annual Review Day. The usual monthly meeting will be limited to 45 minutes to allow an open ended discussion.
Dave Howes reported on progress with the promotional DVD. Full minutes of the meeting are available on the website.
Date of Next Meeting: Thursday June 10th 10.30 at CEIMH
