Matters:

Adrian has identified a suitable alternative email address to enable other members of Suresearch to access email.

Director’s Report:

It has been agreed that, following the move of CEIMH from the Watson building in October, CEIMH will be in the School of Social Policy, Muirhead Tower. Ann has reported that space in the Watson Building is available over the next year for CEIMH to book for events so if Suresearch wishes to arrange this with CEIMH they need to let Ann know.
Four Norwegian visitors from Stavanger’s Competence Centre Focussing on User Participation in Social Services and from a Psychiatric Clinic visited CEIMH and joined part of the “Train the Trainers” session.
The rest of the report can be read on the CEIMH website.

A downloadable PDF file of the Director's Report (April 2010) can be found here

MHRN Heart of England Hub:

Written report from Jackie Smart was circulated.
Adrian and Jerry Tew (Social Care lead for the Hub) have been working to ensure that service users/survivors have direct input into what is researched and how, and are not just recruited as subjects for predetermined research.
A Social Care Research event is planned – contact Adrian for details.
The Hub will also take part in the forthcoming Sandwell Mental Health Foundation event at The Public on 7th June. Provisional themes: Banishing Stigma and Older Adults. Suresearch members are invited to participate.
The Hub has put in a bid for service users to audit some research – they will be informed whether they have got the funding by 10th May.

Scientific Conference:

Steve was made welcome and enjoyed the event. It was very informative in terms of what research was taking place, but there was very little service user/survivor presence.

Birmingham PCT Service User Action Group:

Four service users and two staff visited the Oleaster inpatient unit. Ken said that he felt the unit was dressed up for the occasion, and did not give a genuine impression. The service user visitors were not allowed to talk to staff.

Project Management Course:

This will take place at Uffculme on 28 September – the focus will be on projects involving service users. This may be of use to Suresearch. Two places are available.

Inpatient Care Forum:

Next meeting 10.30 on Thursday May 13th at CEIMH. See Minutes here for further information.

Writers’ Group :

Next meeting 11 am on Friday June 11th. All welcome – bring your work.

Webwatch Meeting:

To follow this meeting. We are waiting for news of possible financial assistance to continue running the existing Dreamweaver software – a computer will also be needed. If none is available, it may be possible to use free Blog pages instead.

Aston research project on Multi-Disciplinary Teams:

Researchers reminded the meeting about the workshops. 12th May workshop fully booked, 15th June has one vacancy – Ken Barlow volunteered for this. There are still vacancies at a Carers’ Workshop on 16th June at CEIMH.

New Research Organisation:

Service users and workers (Rachel Lovesey & Tammy Holmes) from Collaboration Leadership for Applied Health Research and Care – a group based in Lecestershire, Norhamptonshire and Rutland – introduced themselves. They are keen to work with Suresearch.

Future of Suresearch:

Many congratulations and praise were received for the planning and organisation of the Ten Year celebratory event on April 13th. Thanks were given to all those who contributed their time, food or monetary contributions, presentations, music and poetry. The event was self funded and augurs well for SS continuation.
Tarsem gave feedback on CEIMH’s move to Muirhead Tower. Ann Davis is in ongoing negotiations on gaining use of office space and facilities for Suresearch.
Paul McDonald (Research Manager with BSMHFT) has agreed to address the next meeting Suresearch futures meeting-Tuesday May 11th at 10.30-on what the Trust may be able to offer in support of SS continuance post October 2010.
There is still a lot of work to do identifying essential roles post October, with the loss of CEIMH staff support, and volunteers are needed to fill them.
The DVD working group have now agreed to produce two DVDs-one of SS First Ten Years with footage of the Celebratory event included and a promotional one for funding purposes.
Discussions on what sort of organisation SS should be post October 2010 are ongoing.
