Minutes:

The minutes of the previous meeting on Thursday 3rd June 2010 were accepted as a true and accurate record.

Access & Wellbeing Pilot:

Tom Howell of the Pan Birmingham Mental Health Commissioning Team introduced the Access and Wellbeing Pilot in the Sheldon and Shard End area of Birmingham.  A new multidisciplinary team managed by a private company will support 50 services users currently under the Community Mental Health Team. In addition to measurement of outcomes using the Recovery Star tool, the PCT would like Suresearch to run focus groups to provide further evaluation that is independent.  The focus groups would operate during and after the end of the pilot, which is due to start during this summer and will last for 12 months. There is a budget for payment of Suresearch members involved.

Suresearch members will be invited to register interest and a meeting will be organised at a later date. Alex Davis will liaise with Tom Howell on this.

MHRN HUB Update:

Some Suresearch members attended a ‘Mental Health and Social Care Seminar’ on 6 July organised by the Hub, to provide opportunities to discuss taking research ideas forward. The two main areas covered were Self and Identity and Personalisation.

Adrian reported that Jackie Smart (who could not be at the meeting) had passed some information to him on an opportunity to apply for ‘Flexibility and Sustainability Funding’ from the Hub. It was agreed that we would seek further information and discuss at the Future of Suresearch meeting on 12th July.

Inpatient Care Forum Update:

The main item discussed at the last meeting on 8th July was Jo Barber’s spirituality project, which is on the agenda for this July Suresearch meeting.

The next meeting is at 11.00 on Wednesday 4th August.

Writers’ Group Update:

The last meeting had rewritten the lyrics of a Meatloaf song to transform into a song celebrating Suresearch.  Other material by members on how Suresearch has assisted them is being collected and further contributions are welcome.

The meeting discussed the proposed dates for Renata Azman’s therapeutic writing workshop and decided that October was a more realistic option than July at that stage.

The next Writers’ Group meeting is at 11.00 on Friday 30th July.

CEIMH Director’s Report:

A written report was available.

Two seminars were held in June - a survivors’ research seminar on collaborative research in Scotland, and a conversation seminar with David Webb on suicide. There are further survivors’ research seminars on 14th July and 14th September.

Negotiations are continuing on office and meeting place facilities after 31st   October. Adrian reported that the monthly Suresearch meeting is now booked in through to July 2011, although this is in the Glynn rooms rather than the resource room that has been preferred in the past.

It was reported that Nicky now had a permanent post in Human resources and in addition was getting married soon, we decided to minute our thanks to Nicky for all the support she has given to Suresearch.

Suresearch Website Update:

Daniel continues to update the website with the minutes and hand-outs for meetings. The Web Watch meeting on 30th June was poorly attended and a further meeting is to be arranged to look at putting more photos on the site and look further at the options for when the website needs to become independent of the University’s servers. There is a need for reports from members on research and other work they become involved in through Suresearch.

Adrian has obtained a new email address for Suresearch that will replace the use of his University address. Adrian, Stephen and Barbara currently have the login details.

Future of Suresearch:

There will be a ‘Futures’ meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Monday 12th July.

Coffee break

Presentation on Spirituality Project:

Jo Barber gave a presentation on Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust’s Spirituality Project.

Jo has played a major part in developing a handbook on spirituality which is to be used to train mental health workers in the trust, and can be offered to other trusts. Illness has reduced the size of the team; the other member is currently Maddy Parkes who was also present at the meeting, and academic support has been obtained from a University of Durham professor.

A spiritual wellbeing scale is being developed and a questionnaire. Jo said that they wanted to test these with Suresearch members, and a meeting is being organised in August for those interested. There will be a budget for travel expenses, and lunch will be provided.

In response to questions, Jo confirmed that staff in community as well as inpatient services would be trained.

A copy of Jo’s presentation will be made available for posting on the website.

AOB:

Jemma reported that she is writing a book and was looking for service users who would like to be interviewed about their journey through mental health issues and a recovery process.

Stephen reminded the meeting of the MissionMiraculus road shows mentioned at the last meeting and that the next one was in Moseley, Birmingham on Saturday 10th July.

Gary referred to his website and made a selection of leaflets available.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING:

Thursday 5th August at 1030 a.m.
