Update from Ann Davis

Ann updated us on her negotiations with the College of Social Science re. CEIMH and Suresearch. CEIMH will close on October 31st on these premises and move into Institute of Applied Social Studies at Muirhead Tower. The space here will be taken over by CLAD (Centre for Learning and Academic Development),  who will be working across the University on technologically informed approaches  to teaching and learning. All  staff who were seconded to CEIMH from the University will return to IAS.
It is hoped CEIMH will bring in enough income through a range of  research, teaching and consultancy projects to re-establish a service user co-ordinator post. Ann is hopeful that CEIMH be able to fund Suresearch travel expenses  throughout next year for not  monthly meeting and subgroups , provide refreshments for meetings and that some of Helena’s time can be allocated to Suresearch admin. She is also negotiating for some designated space for SS. She expects a decision to be made by Mid August on the former and by the end of August on accommodation.
CEIMH  will be looking for a self selected SS advisory group of service users to work with it. It will also look for expertise in certain areas ie building resources for website and there will be some paid work. JQ asked about the current library resources: any unwanted ones will go to Tbilisi in Georgia where Ann has links. Tony’s plaque will move with CEIMH.
There will be a Celebration of CEIMH on Wed October 6th to which Suresearch members will be invited.

Heart of England Hub

Jackie Smart, service user co-ordinator for HoE Mental Health Research Network, was unable to attend but sent an update. AD highlighted SS members’ involvement in the successful Personalisation & Self & Identity seminar of July 6th. The Birmingham and Black Country Clinical Lead Research Network is hosting workshops in Clinical Governance Practice on Wed Sept 22nd at the Womens Hospital. JS has arranged for places to be available for service users. If you are interested contact her on jacqueline.smart@bsmhft.nhs.uk

In Patient Care Forum

At yesterdays meeting JB discussed further developments in BSMHFT’s Spirituality project. She and MP, her admin assistant, following up last months presentation did a further powerpoint presentation at today’s meeting. She promoted a Spiritual Research ScaleScoping day at CEIMH on Thursday August 19th 11-3pm, the planning of which occupied yesterday’s meeting. Flyers were handed out today.
Maureen Smokjis is using members of IPCF group to produce digital stories around ‘Journey of Recovery’ and ‘How I stay Healthy’ for her Preceptorship Nursing course. PR reminded members that the group is open to all service users-you do not need to have been hospitalised-and IPCF deals with Community mental health services as well as acute settings. Travel expenses are paid. Full minutes are available on SS website.
The next meeting is Wed Sept 8th 10.30 till 12.30 in SR3.

Writers Group

Group has been working on a song celebrating CEIMH based on  Meatloaf and also completing other written contributions. It is suggested that CEIMH’s celebrations on Oct 6th would be perfect time to present these.
The group meet next on Fri Sept 10th (TBC). DH is looking to book in meetings through to next July on these premises.

CEIMH Director’s Report

Highlight of July’s CEIMHs activities was the Service User Research Seminar of July 14th ‘The Survivor History Movement and the History of Self Harm Activism presented by Andrew Roberts and Mark Cresswell which was extremely well attended and produced a lively discussion. BN was an excellent chair and Suresearch archives are now listed on Survivors History timeline.
The final version of the university’s first Mental Health Guidance for students and staff was agreed for publication. It was produced with involvement from AD as author  and other members of SS. It will be launched in October, with a year long programme of activities aimed at raising mental health awareness across the university at the same time. CEIMH will be taking part in this and welcomes SS members’ involvement.

Suresearch Website

There has been no meeting of Webwatch of late. Daniel continues to update with minutes of Suresearch minutes.

Future of Suresearch

The group which met yesterday has been looking into the possibility of bidding for money from Mental Health Research Network’s ‘Sustainability and Research Fund’ (deadline Sept 13th). This could be  paid to fund a salary/salaries for a service user training project in Research methodology and enable service users to collaborate in research projects or even lead on them on an equal basis with research academics with confidence. HOE Hub are very encouraging for SS to make a bid as there is a big gap in service users’ expertise in this field and nothing in the way of training courses regionally. If successful it would be possible for BSMHFT to administer the employment of the project leader. A SS steering group would need to guide the project. The group requested permission to pursue this application which this meeting agreed to. With the bid still at the ‘ideas’ stage  PR welcomed anyone who might be interested in being involved.

Inevitably following on from this is the necessity of SS forming a basic organisation (ie with a bank account, constitution and officers-to act as a/c signatories, mission statement optional) in order to put in a bid and if successful receive and dispense money. This is a step that SS has avoided in the past and the loose network of service users has worked well but in order to apply for funding as SS can no longer rely on UoB support it was agreed this particular bullet needs to be
bitten. The Chair requested a vote if the meeting had the authority to agree this which was passed with an overwhelming majority ( he pointed out the meeting represented the active members of SS). A further unanimous vote agreed to the setting up of this basic organisation. Members raised the issue of SS becoming a Community Interest Company but this was felt premature and given the time frame for the S&F bid unrealistic. SJ has agreed to draft a Constitution ready to be discussed on that day.
David Howes and Barbara Norden continue to work on the Promotional DVd. The material for the 10 Year SS Celebratory DVD is complete and DH should be able to finish editing this soon.
