Heart of England HUB Mental Health Research Network
JS reported that the ‘Progressing Collaborative Research Seminar’ at Carrs Lane, Birmingham on Feb 22nd had gone very well with 45+ in attendance and she had received excellent feedback. Good research ideas had come from it to follow up-the three main workshops being around Advocacy, Self and Identity and Disability. JS thanked Suresearch members who had facilitated these sessions.
CC and JS through MHRN are keen to support Suresearch in accessing small pockets of funding available in the future for ’Back Office skills' , for example, management and financial courses.
There is a place available for a Suresearch member who has not been before to the Scientific Conference in Bristol on April 19th/21st.
The Involve Conference takes place in November at the East Midlands Conference Centre. Expressions of interest are requested for presentations, posters and workshops by April 12th. There is no information about participation costs yet.
CEIMH Director’s Report for February
TSC briefed the meeting on CEIMHs activities in February. See CEIMH website for full report.
In Patient Care Forum
At the last meeting on Feb 24th, IPCF focussed on Maureen Smokjis application for National Lottery Heritage Funding of ‘Memories from the Asylum’. There was also a discussion about the planned closure of Main House, Longbridge, a therapeutic centre for people diagnosed as having Severe Personality Disorders. There is a March 17th deadline for petitions and protests about the decision. Please access IPCF minutes on Suresearch website for full details.
Next IPCF meeting Tuesday, March 23rd at 1.30pm at CEIMH. NB: this is a change of date.
Writer’s Group
At the next meeting on Tuesday, March 9th the group will consider its contribution to the 10 Years of Suresearch celebratory event. GO’B highlighted writing opportunities including Cool Tans Arts.
Suresearch Website
Progress has been delayed because of a virus on CEIMH computers, but otherwise all is going well. A meeting of WebWatch will follow today at 1 p.m. TCS will be there to advise on the issues involved in developing independence from the University systems for the Suresearch website.
The Suresearch Archives
RB has been employed by CEIMH to create a Suresearch Archive-the first ten years- for the April Celebrations event. Interest had been expressed by the national Survivors History Network to see a lasting archive of Suresearch achievements for not only Suresearch members to peruse. Material has been sourced from the Suresearch filing cabinet, CEIMH staff and the CEIMH/Suresearch websites. Each year from 2000 to 2010 has its own folder and is divided into sections-articles and creative pieces, correspondence, events, review days and meetings attended, projects involved in and reports written or contributed to and miscellaneous. These divisions make it easier to access and there is a contents page for each one. All materials contained within the archive are for reference only. They are master copies that can be removed, photocopied and then returned to the archive.
RB explained how members can contribute to the archive before the April 13th event. She asked members to look at the archives which shelved in the Suresearch office and check for errors or omissions and provide corrections and additions to Nicky Young. Any photos (with persons named), event posters and reports on anything members have been to will be particularly appreciated. The deadline for these are Friday April 2nd.
RB’s involvement will end on April 13th but she has kindly offered to provide a format pack so that the Archives can be added to in the same style when Suresearch takes over the responsibility to maintain and continue the archive. Members might need to identify roles in the future for achieving this. AD2 suggested placing a copy on the Suresearch Website. DP thanked RB for all her work on behalf of members.
Future of Suresearch
In the absence of any firm news of Suresearch continuing at the University of Birmingham beyond October ( a decision should be made re the use of CEIMH’s current accommodation by April) it was agreed use the meeting’s time to focus on the Ten Years Celebrations Day on April 13th (as urgent decisions needed to be agreed) and the celebratory/promotional DVD.
The draft timetable for the Celebrations is:
12.00 Introduction and Welcome by Adrian Fisher
12.05 Keynote speaker Prof. Ann Davis- ‘Suresearch and me’.
12.15 Guest speaker Dr Paul McDonald-‘Suresearch &BSMHFT’
12.30 Launch of DVD with David Howes
12.50 Lunch with further showing of DVD plus music and comedy spots.
1.45 Marion Clark
1.55 Jackie Smart-‘Me and my journey’
2.05 Writers’ Group
2.25 Janet Quereshi reads from her book of poetry
2.40 Coffee Break
3.00 Jean Jeffries-‘My research with MACA’
3.10 Duncan Purslow-‘Past, Present & Future’-a theme of the Archives
3.20 Adrian Fisher-closing remarks
The Suresearch Archives will be on display plus a Writers group exhibition.
CEIMH will provide refreshments for the Suresearch meeting that day but Suresearch will have to provide food and beverages for the celebration. Members agreed to make a financial contribution to the food kitty or food itself rather than pay for an outside caterer. £75 were raised and 5 offers of food contributions made. Absent members can still bring food on the day or contact Adrian about how best to contribute via e-mail ( a.fisher@bham.ac.uk) or phone(0121 414 8170). Adrian agreed to look after the kitty and facilitate the catering with help of other members. The catering will include vegetarian options.
Suresearch have booked the Glynn rooms and the Social Space for lunch and will cater for 50.
Invitations will be sent out with this Suresearch mailout and applications agreed on first come basis. Nicky Young has agreed to monitor numbers. JS pointed out the importance of chasing people up to confirm attendance.
JG and DH updated progress on the DVD and related what will be included and the ‘shape’ of the filming. It will be both entertaining and informative. Filming should be finished soon and editing will begin. There will be accompanying copyrighted music featured but as the DVD is for educational/awareness purposes the authorities need only be informed as a matter of courtesy.
Further discussion on both items will follow at the next Futures meeting at 2pm after this meeting and the Webwatch meeting.
AOB
The User Voice Forum is holding a talk on ‘Home Treatment’ at the Oleaster on March 22nd for Service Users only from 11 till 2pm with a speaker and lunch provided. The Forum are also interested in doing research into Afro-Caribbean men’s experience of Sectioning. BN asked for any guidance on how to approach this research.
PR proposed and the meeting agreed to have names of attendees de-anonymized on minutes of meetings in the future. The onus is on the individual to inform AF if they do not wish to have their names published.
