Inpatient Care Forum

The Inpatient Care Forum (IPCF) is one of the sub-groups of Suresearch which was formed in the summer of 2006. The group is an open forum that meets monthly at the Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Mental Health (CEIMH) at the University of Birmingham.

It concerns itself with psychiatric inpatient issues and is mainly composed of people who have been in psychiatric hospitals, but not exclusively as there is a retired social worker and a nurse counsellor/educator.

The forum was initiated following a Suresearch Review Day where it was felt that inpatient issues were not being adequately addressed at Suresearch meetings.

To date the group has been involved in a number of projects including:

    • revising the Tidal Model Handbook (2008), an holistic approach to mental health nursing, and producing a DVD of a filmed discussion which is available on the CEIMH website.
    • producing Digital Stories around medication for Alison Coates' Mental Health Nursing Programme at Birmingham University. These were used at a Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) conference around Innovative Practice, and subsequently in training.
    • producing Digital Stories around hospitalisation for a series of workshops organised by Rachel Spector (Clinical Psychologist in Inpatient Care - BSMHFT). All the Digital Stories are available to view on the CEIMH website, and have received positive feedback.

The group has provided a valuable link in ensuring that the service user voice is heard in the training and education of nurses working in inpatient services.
