Corrections to Minutes of last meeting

SJ pointed out he had not volunteered to help with facilitating the break out small group sessions on Scoping Day  as he was unavailable to attend.

Spiritual Recovery Scale

JB presented a revised SRS based on feedback received at the extremely successful Scoping Day on Aug 17th. The group worked through the revised Scale with additions suggested by JG. If the bid is successful the scale will be used from the first day of admission or the next practicable day given the severity of a patient’s mental condition. It will then be used fortnightly until discharge and then at three months intervals in the community. The bid will need to be in by Sept 24th although the outcome will not be known until March 2011.

Spiritual Intervention Pilot

A pilot scheme, for which ethical approval has been received, will be run in various parts of B&SMHFT, who are financing it, until the results of the bid are known. This will involve 100 service users chosen randomly with half in- patients and half out- patients. The SRS, Personal Recovery Scale and WHOQOL (World Health Organisation Quality of Life) scale-which measures material needs- will be used. Half will receive Spiritual Intervention and half will not. Spiritual Intervention would involve a trained nurse in SI(couple of half day sessions) who who would be a named nurse. The trained nurse would create a Spiritual Care Record which might detail a walk in the country or a chat with a Chaplain for example. The Spiritual Care Plan will be individually tailored to each patient. Trained nurses  would be involved in interdisciplinary meetings detailing their patients progress in recovery and advising how their Spiritual Care  could be improved. Half the nurses on a ward will be trained in SI and half not. The Chaplaincy services/member of SI team would get involved in clinical care and see and visit patients. The Chaplaincy services will be expanded with voulunteers .Any progress in recovery shown in SCR will be matched against those who do not receive SI. The pilot will help the validation process of SRS, confirming robustness, reliability and internal consistency. The validation will measure what you want to be measured.

‘Voices From The Asylum’ Heritage Lottery Project

MIND Birmingham have agreed with MS to put in bid for monies for the ‘Voices…’ project and financially administer the project, starting on writing up the application in October. A member of IPCF will help in the writing up of the submission. The outcome of the bid should be known within 10 weeks of submission. MS has suggested MIND use the template of her successful Polish project. IPCF will be stakeholders in the project and feature in the projects steering committee. Members of IPCF will be trained up to carry out interviews with patients , relatives and staff of the former institutions which were all closed by 1993 as a result of the Community Care Act. IPCF will also be trained to create Digital Stories with these interviewees, all their work and travel expenses paid for. A literature review will be required.

Digital Stories

Work has started on producing digital stories around ‘Journey Of Recovery’ and ‘What keeps me Well’. The next work  session for which MS is not available to supervise is on Friday, Sept 24th at 10.30. It is hoped Dee Partridge will be available to set up the equipment and room and AF might be available to help out on producing the digital stories.

Room Bookings

Meetings booked at Watson Building are being honoured if booked by October 31st. Suresearch and The Writers Group sub group have already booked out meetings until July 2011. IPCF are reluctant however to do this, wanting flexibility to meet when it is needed and when people are most available.

Date of Next Meeting

Thursday, October 14th 10.30 till 12.30 in Seminar room 3 at CEIMH
