MINUTES OF IN PATIENT CARE FORUM MEETING

Wednesday Feb 24th, 2010 at CEIMH

Present:

Maureen Smokjis, Adrian Fisher, Jean Jeffries, SJ, Janie Greville, Gordon Parsons, Paul Roberts

Apologies:

Alex Davis, Barbara Norden, Jo Barber

Heritage Lottery Funding

Maureen and Ann Davis will be soon sending off preliminary application form for ‘Memories From the Asylum’ to guage potential successfulness of full application. Maureen was successful with Polish project previously and every indication this will be too. The rest of the group will be involved in putting together the final application.

There will be a Project manager/ assistant and Steering Committee drawn mainly from IPCF, plus volunteers to carry out digital story interviews and access library archive material all of whom will be paid. Training will be given in producing digital stories and archive accessing.

There will be a Launch day (conference) plus travelling exhibition of Birmingham libraries.

Archives from Highcroft Hospital exist and are accessible for research purposes as is other material from All Saints and elsewhere. Barnsley Hall, Bromsgrove, is another possibility as patients from Birmingham had been received there. GP described it as ‘an example of Community Living’ where food was grown and many activities went on. Everyone with a story is relevant from the Consultant Psychiatrist to the cleaner. Mention was made of the Birmingham Industrial Therapy Association as a possible source of material.

Closure of Main House, Longbridge

As a result of pressure, the threatened closure of Main House (a residential and out patient therapeutic centre for people suffering from severe Personality Disorders) has been deferred until the newly extended consultation period ends on March 17th. It is now the only centre of its kind in UK. Its funding has become vulnerable as a result of the switch from government central funding, to local trusts.

Rachel  Spektor

Maureen plans to invite Clinical  Psychologist Rachel Spektor, whom the group produced digital stories around Hospitalisation for a workshop with, along to a meeting to feedback how well it went went.

Date of Next Meeting

Tuesday March 23rd 2010

10.00am at CEIMH
